Cool Kids • Running for Cancer Fun Run!
Who would have guessed that a group of 3rd grade friends could dream up, organize, and pull off a fundraiser for childhood cancer that would gross well over $2,000.00 – all by themselves? That is exactly what happened on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Meyer Park in Gulf Shores.
Inspired by a recent coin drive at their school, four 3rd grade Gulf Shores Elementary students were driven to do more than just donate their coins – they banded together and convinced their mothers to help them host the 1st Annual “Cool Kids Running for Cancer” one-mile fun run event.
Not only did these four friends work tirelessly for months planning this event, they also wrote and delivered their own appeal to the Gulf Shores City Council and Mayor Robert Craft during a council session. With such dedication and enthusiasm, the City of Gulf Shores could hardly say no – thus the 3rd grade students were permitted to use Meyer Park and their fundraiser moved full steam ahead.
Imagine their excitement on the day of the event, when car after car began to fill the parking and overflowed to the streets!
Ultimately, nearly 200 people attended and/or took part in the 1-mile fun run. Familiar faces and friendly smiles made this a fantastic way to spend time with family on a Saturday morning – all thanks to young children who wanted to help others battling an unforgiving disease.
Jensen’s Heart of Gold Foundation would like to extend our heart-felt thanks to 3rd graders Catie, Haley, Mary Elizabeth, and Raeleigh (last names omitted for privacy). With the gentle guidance of their mothers, these girls planned the event, solicited sponsors, obtained permitting, and executed such a huge undertaking. Their initiative and leadership will surely serve them well and their kindness will go a long way in helping local children fighting cancer.
We would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring this event and ask that you consider them and the services they provide: Alabama Credit Union, Publix, Krispy Kreme, and Printing Zone. We would also like to thank the City of Gulf Shores, the National Guard, Gulf Shores Elementary School, and the many volunteers who helped make this happen.
