2019 Jensen's Heart of Gold Scholarship goes to...
In over three decades, only one new drug has been developed specifically for childhood cancer. Most of the treatments being used today were developed for adults. It is for this reason, and many others, that JHG has extended an annual scholarship to a graduating senior at Gulf Shores High School entering the medical field.
These children need a voice. They need an advocate, for they cannot fight alone. We can only hope that our recipients will use their voice to stand up for these kids, to fight for better funding, and to one day assist in the development of new treatment protocols.
We are well aware that it takes heart, compassion, empathy, dedication, and hard work to enter into such a daunting profession. Many health care providers do not receive the credit that they are due! Since implementing this scholarship, we have been blessed to cross paths with some truly amazing students who have the drive and the willingness to make a change in this world. This year's recipient was no different!
The recipient of the 2019 Jensen’s Heart of Gold Scholarship is Ally Stevens. Ally plans on attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she received early acceptance into the Dean’s Nursing School and the UAB Honors College. Upon graduation, she hopes to continue her education in one of the master’s programs offered at UAB. Ally is ranked number six in her class with a 4.38 GPA. As part of her application, Ally wrote a well rounded research paper on brain and spinal cord tumors in children.
JHG has witnessed the untimely passing of several children from those types of tumors and we truly hope that in our lifetime we will see an end to them all. Congratulations Ally. We look forward to supporting you and to watching you do many great things for all of those in need!
